Plants of the Month
Air Plant Tillandia xerographica
Tropical houseplant
If you don’t already find the world of plants endlessly fascinating like we do, maybe you need to meet this exotic creature. These xeric epiphytes are native to Mexico and Guatemala, where they reside in the crotches of trees, collecting dew and rainwater. Their rough, silver leaves are composed of scales that allow them to absorb humidity from the air. Neat, huh? Since they do not require soil to live, they may be mounted on a rock, piece of driftwood or placed anywhere they’ll receive some light that looks good to you. Care for them by misting once a week, taking care not to allow water to accumulate in the rosette. In nature, birds and insects use the cup within the rosette as a source of water, but without the assistance of thirsty wildlife a homebound air plant may rot.
These plants are living sculptures, with the knockout combination of silver foliage and long curling leaves. Their bloom is similar to that of a bromeliad. These were once endangered plants, but thanks to plant breeding technology, they are being grown by nurseries around the world so that we can enjoy them in our homes. This is also a fun plant to spark an interesting conversation with the kids about the world’s ecosystems and nature’s amazing gifts.
Yellow Ribbon Arborvitae Thuja occidentalis 'Yellow Ribbon'
Zones 3-7
We have been admiring the yellow-orange tones of this conifer and the delightful color it provides on a bleary winter day. New growth starts out bright yellow maturing to green, and taking on warm orangey tones with cold weather. Besides its color, this evergreen is exceedingly useful in so many landscaping situations because of its moderate size. It is a fairly slow grower that will reach 10 feet in height and a 3 foot width, with an upright pyramidal shape at maturity.
Yellow Ribbon enjoys full sun and good drainage and is suitable for containers. Beautiful when placed against deep green conifers or dark walls. The accompanying picture is of a new shoot with Arizona Cypress, another fabulous conifer for Tennessee in the background. The contrasting colors and forms conifers provide in the winter garden are such a treat for the eyes, particularly on snowy days, such as we’ve had this year.
Tip of the Month
The end of February is a great time to cut ornamental grasses back. This task may be simplified by binding the grass clump with a bungee cord before you cut. Some blades may come loose, but it will be a much cleaner job this way. A chainsaw, weed whacker or hedge trimmer (with blade attachment) make quick work of cutting through large, established clumps. Good, sharp shears work fine, too. Wear gloves if you are working with pampas, or a similarly sharp bladed grass.
Since you’ll be tackling this job so early (good for you!) you may cut the old growth back as close to the ground as you like. There is no danger of cutting off new growth tips this early. This task can be postponed to a later date, but once those spring rains start, you’ll wish you’d gotten to it sooner!
