Plant of the Month
Yuletide Camellia Camellia sasanqua 'Yuletide'
Zones 7-10
True red, single blooms with bright yellow centers adorn this beauty of a shrub. Lustrous foliage on this is evergreen and handsome all year. Yuletide blooms October through January, brightening cold and bleak days. Camellias require acidic soil, so choose a fertilizer that acidifies. We recommend Holly Tone from Espoma. All camellias should be planted where they will be sheltered from wind exposure, and harsh afternoon sun. Shade to part shade is best
Holly Fern Cyrtomium falcatum
Zones 7-10
A wonderful, evergreen perennial for the shade garden with broad, shiny leaves persist past frost, and are gloriously lush through fall. An area protected from harsh wind and sun exposure is best, so that it can remain truly green through winter. Harsh weather exposure will knock this fern’s foliage back, but even so, it’s the last one standing. Grows 2-3’ tall and wide.
Gold Cone Juniper
Juniperus communis 'Gold cone'
Hardy to Zone 4
If I had a nickel for every person that asked us for an evergreen that didn’t get too tall or too wide, so they could plant it up by the entryway, in an urn, in between two windows….well, I’d be planting a whole bunch of these at my house instead of writing about them. Gold Cone reaches roughly 6’ high in about 10 years, with a 2-3’ width retaining a tight, congested form all year. New growth is yellow, providing excellent contrast if your home is a dark color. We’ve got these in a 4” size, perfect for winter containers and troughs, cute holiday table size, or a specimen 5’ size for instant landscape gratification. Plant in full sun, with well-drained soil. Gold Cone benefits from being sheared back some, in early spring.
Tip of the Month
Holiday décor’ - Bring the outside in! Hollies laden with berries and evergreens are delicious to behold right now, so cut some of your favorite limbs and place them in a vase to enjoy during the holidays. Crabapple tree limbs make a wonderful decoration all by themselves. Dress your holiday table with some of these, and revel in the simple pleasures of this holiday season. That’s Arizona Cypress in the photo with a Prairiefire Crabapple, just to get your creative juices flowin’.
Bulbs - Paper whites may be forced indoors right now for fragrance and much appreciated winter blooms. Use a container that does not have drainage holes. Fill it with 1 to 2 inches of decorative rock or gravel and place your bulbs on top. Bury the bulb with the pointy side up and with roughly one-third exposed above the rock. If using several bulbs, they may be packed tightly to support each other and make a good show. Water enough to keep base of bulbs wet, but no more than that or they will rot. Keep in a cool dark place until growth appears, and then move them into a sunnier location. You should see blooms in about 3 weeks.
