A Few Words about Organics

The term organic has recently been catapulted out of its’ relative obscurity and kooky reputation into everyday life. Despite all the exposure, many people are unsure of how to incorporate “organic living” into their lives and how it impacts their families and communities.

Many gardeners, old and young, are familiar with organic methods. Synthetic chemical applications in the garden are in large part the result of wartime industries. The application of animal manures, composted vegetation and mulching are all examples of time tested organic gardening methods. Pyrethrum, found in many common and organic insecticides, is extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. Many natural ingredients have been in widespread use since before the term organic was common.

Arguments supporting organic methods as opposed to synthetic ones are:

  • Natural compounds break down faster than synthetic ones do. Therefore, the impact on us, groundwater and surrounding wildlife is lessened.
  • Many nutrients are missing from synthetic fertilizers. Plants and crops may appear to thrive, but, in the long run our soils are eroded, & depleted of nutrients, making plants more vulnerable to pests & stress. This encourages the use of more synthetic chemicals…Soils that are rich in organic matter contain more nutrients and host beneficial bacteria & organisms that add tilt & nutrition to our soil; strength & resilience to our plants.
  • Many pesticides target all insects, even those that are beneficial. While many of us fear bugs, it is important to remember that they pollinate our crops, and are often the very predators we need in the garden to kill our pests off for us!
